Gilbert, AZ – Synectic Design was hired by former professional skater Mike McIntyre to design a building that reflects the industrial – sometimes anarchistic – culture of skating.
The building responds to the rugged concrete and steel environment of a skateboard street course. Constructed entirely of masonry and steel, acid-rusted steel was employed for all of the structural elements, interior partitions and counters. Galvanized steel panels sheath the exterior skin and roof.
The roof structure cantilevers from a series of masonry fins and is skinned with alternating galvanized and translucent panels. The exterior walls, of steel tubes and galvanized steel plate, are independent of the rest of the structure. All connectors and fixtures are galvanized or stainless steel.
